Some free logo tools are genuinely useful. Others are free right up until you try to download the result. Here's what we actually found.
As a Sydney web design agency that builds and launches over 100 websites a year, we work with a lot of small businesses that are just starting out. Budget is tight, the logo needs to be done, and the question of whether to use a free tool or hire a designer comes up constantly.
The honest answer is: it depends on where your business is at.
For a business that's been operating for years, has an established client base, and is trying to grow, your logo is doing real work. It's on your website, your email signature, your vehicles, your signage. A free AI-generated logo that looks like a hundred others in your industry is a risk that outweighs the cost saving. Get it designed properly.
For a brand-new business that needs something functional before revenue is flowing, free tools are a legitimate option. They've improved significantly in recent years and some produce results that are perfectly acceptable for early-stage use.
We've tested the main options. Here's what we found.
Before you start: A few things to check for any free tool you use. Does the free tier let you download a high-resolution PNG or SVG file, or only a low-resolution version? Do you retain commercial rights to the logo? Can you export a transparent-background version? These three things determine whether a 'free' logo is actually usable.
1. Canva
Canva is probably the most widely used design tool for small businesses and its logo maker is genuinely good. The interface is clean, the template library is large, and it's straightforward to customise colours, fonts, and layout without any design experience.
The free tier allows PNG downloads. Transparent background export (which you'll need for most practical uses) requires a Canva Pro subscription at around $19.99 per month. SVG export is also Pro only.
If you already have a Canva Pro subscription for other design work, the logo maker is excellent value. If you're starting from scratch and only need a logo, the free tier is limiting.
- Free tier includes: PNG download at standard resolution, large template library, basic customisation
- Requires paid plan: Transparent background PNG, SVG export, premium elements
- Commercial use: Yes, with attribution-free use on free tier for basic elements
2. Looka
Looka uses AI to generate logo concepts based on your business name, industry, and a short style questionnaire. The generation process is quick and the results are generally polished and professional-looking.
The catch is that Looka is not actually free. You can browse concepts and preview them at no cost, but downloading any usable file requires purchasing a package. Prices start at around $20 for a basic PNG download.
We're including it here because it appears in 'free logo maker' searches and many people don't realise it's paid until they've spent time customising a design. Worth knowing before you invest the time.
- Free tier includes: Logo concept preview only
- Requires paid plan: Any download
- Commercial use: Yes, with purchase
3. Hatchful by Shopify
Hatchful is a straightforward, genuinely free logo generator from Shopify. You answer a few questions about your business and it produces a set of logo concepts you can customise and download.
The output is simpler than some other tools but the download is actually free, including high-resolution PNG with transparent background. There are no hidden paywalls for the core functionality.
The template range is smaller than Canva and the customisation options are limited, but for a genuinely no-cost option with usable file output, it's one of the better choices.
- Free tier includes: High-res PNG, transparent background, unlimited downloads
- Requires paid plan: Nothing core is paywalled
- Commercial use: Yes
4. LogoMakr
LogoMakr gives you a blank canvas and a library of icons, shapes, and fonts to work with. It's more of a manual design tool than an AI generator, which means the quality of the result depends more on your own design eye.
Low-resolution downloads are free. High-resolution files require a one-time payment of around $19. For most practical purposes, low-resolution is not sufficient for print use, but it's adequate for web and social media.
- Free tier includes: Low-resolution PNG download
- Requires paid plan: High-resolution and SVG files
- Commercial use: Yes
5. Wix Logo Maker
Wix Logo Maker is similar to Looka in its approach: an AI-driven questionnaire generates logo concepts that you can customise. The interface is polished and the results are generally good.
Also similar to Looka, it's not free to download the result. File downloads require purchasing a package.
- Free tier includes: Preview only
- Requires paid plan: Any file download
- Commercial use: Yes, with purchase
6. DesignEvo
DesignEvo has a large library of templates across many industries and the customisation tools are more flexible than most free options. The interface is clean and it's genuinely easy to use.
The free tier allows download of a low-resolution PNG with a watermark. Removing the watermark and accessing higher resolution files requires a paid plan starting at around $24.99 for a one-time purchase.
- Free tier includes: Low-resolution PNG with watermark
- Requires paid plan: Watermark removal, high-resolution, SVG
- Commercial use: Only with paid plan
7. Adobe Express (formerly Adobe Spark)
Adobe Express has a free tier with a reasonable selection of logo templates. The Adobe brand carries genuine design credibility and the template quality tends to be higher than the no-name alternatives.
The free tier includes PNG downloads but transparent backgrounds and premium templates require an Adobe Express Premium subscription. If you're already in the Adobe ecosystem, it's worth trying. If not, the free tier is more limited than it initially appears.
- Free tier includes: PNG downloads, limited templates
- Requires paid plan: Transparent background, premium templates, SVG
- Commercial use: Yes on free tier for eligible assets
8. Tailor Brands
Tailor Brands generates AI logo concepts and allows extensive customisation. The quality of output is generally high and it includes options for brand kit creation beyond just the logo.
Like Looka and Wix Logo Maker, it's not actually free. Downloads require a subscription starting at around $3.99 per month (billed annually). The subscription also includes access to other branding tools, so if you need a broader brand identity package, the value is reasonable.
- Free tier includes: Preview and customisation only
- Requires paid plan: Any file download
- Commercial use: Yes, with subscription
9. Namecheap Free Logo Maker
Namecheap's logo maker is straightforward, less sophisticated than the AI-driven options, but genuinely free. You get a reasonable selection of templates to work from and the download includes PNG files without a watermark.
It's not going to produce the most distinctive result but it's an honest free tool with no hidden payment step.
- Free tier includes: PNG download, no watermark
- Requires paid plan: Nothing core is paywalled
- Commercial use: Yes
10. Canva Free (revisited): the practical choice for most
For most small businesses starting out, our practical recommendation is Canva's free tier combined with a transparent background workaround. Tools like remove.bg can strip the background from a Canva PNG for free, giving you a usable transparent version without needing Canva Pro. It's a two-step process but it works.
Canva's template quality is higher than most free alternatives, the customisation is intuitive, and the result is something you can actually use across your website and social media.
When a free logo tool is not the right call
Free logo tools produce templated results. The same icon library is available to every other business using the platform, which means you will occasionally see your own logo used by a competitor who chose the same template and changed the colour.
They also have no understanding of your business. A good logo designer asks questions, does research, understands your industry and your clients, and creates something that reflects your specific positioning. Free tools generate based on a category selection and a few words.
If your business is established, if you're investing in a new website, if you're spending money on marketing, a professional logo is worth the cost. It's a one-time investment that affects every other piece of your brand for years.
Our logo design service starts from $350 and includes three initial concepts, two rounds of revisions, and final files in all formats you'll need.
Bottom line: Free tools are a practical option for new businesses with limited budgets. For an established business investing in growth, professional design is worth it. If you're getting a new website built anyway, it makes sense to sort the logo at the same time.
