Search Engine Optimisation (SEO)
for Small Business

A guide to what SEO is, what your website already includes, and what it actually takes to rank on Google. Written for business owners, not marketers.

What is Search Engine Optimisation?

SEO (search engine optimisation) is the work of helping your website show up on Google when someone searches for what you do. That is the whole idea. Everything else you read about it, keywords, backlinks, rankings, is detail sitting under that one goal.

This guide is the honest version that tries to explain SEO in easy language. It's best used as a starting point to inform you of how it works, waht you need to know, what you can do yourself and a realistic idea of what to expect if you engage a professional SEO provider.

The two searches that matter

Try this now. Type your business name into Google. If your website has been live for more than a couple of weeks, it should be on page one, usually at the top. Your business name is unique, nobody else is competing for it, and a properly built website wins that search almost by default.

Now type what a stranger would search. Not your name, the thing you do: "plumber Penrith", "bookkeeper Bankstown", "physio near me". Now it's less likely your website will show up in these search results. Those search result rankings are held by businesses that have invested in SEO for years, with dozens of pages, hundreds of reviews and links from other websites pointing their way. A new website does not outrank them just by existing.

The gap between those two searches is the whole SEO conversation. Being findable by name comes with a properly built site. Being findable by strangers is a competition to outrank other websites, and competitions take sustained and considered work over a period of time.

A new website is the starting line, not the finish

There is a common assumption that publishing a website means customers will automatically find you online. What actually happens when you get a new websites is that Google discovers the site, indexes it, and begins showing it for your business name and a handful of low-competition searches. Google says indexing can take anywhere from several house to several weeks. In practice, most new websites are indexed within about a week.

From there, rankings are earned, not granted. The sites that climb do so because someone keeps working on them. Adding pages that answer real customer questions, collecting reviews, earning mentions and links from other sites. Sites left untouched stay roughly where they landed. What we do is make sure your foundation is right, then point you at the work that moves the needle for your industry.

The three kinds of search marketing

On-page SEO

Everything on your own website structure and pages: titles, headings, content, speed and schema. This is the part that we provide in your website build.

Organic SEO

The long game: keyword strategy, new content, backlinks, authority. This is what moves you up for competitive searches, and it is monthly specialist work.
How our SEO referral works

What we do, and what we hand to specialists

Every website we build ships with on-page SEO applied to your site. We include keyword research for your business and area, page titles and meta descriptions written for real searches, clean heading structure, fast Australian hosting, mobile layouts, schema markup and a sitemap submitted to Google.

What we do not do is ongoing SEO campaigns, link building, content retainers or ad management. Those are a different trade. Rather than sell you a watered-down version, we refer clients who are ready for that work to our SEO partners at Next Level Strategy for dedicated advice on the best approach for your industry.

Each industry is best advised based on experience that shows the most effective methods for results. It's not advisable to recommend a single standard approach because the SEO landscape has grown so much that and honest analysis should consider what works and what doesn't for your specific business.

Honest expectations

Nobody can guarantee a first-page ranking, and Google itself warns against anyone who promises one. What you can reasonably expect from a properly built site is that you will be found for a search of your business name ranking within days of indexing and low-competition local searches within weeks to months.

Ranking for competitive and high volume terms should genuinely take measured work over months to years. Anyone quoting a fixed timeframe to position one is likely guessing or misleading you.

Where to next?

Have questions?
We’ve got answers

Our friendly team is ready to help you navigate your way to a fresh web design.

For your business name, usually within days of Google indexing the site. For local service searches, weeks to a few months depending on competition. Google says indexing itself can take from several hours to several weeks.

On-page SEO is included in every build. Ongoing SEO campaigns are a separate specialist service, and we refer those to Next Level Strategy rather than selling retainers ourselves.

No, and neither can anyone else. Google explicitly warns against SEO providers who promise rankings. Be wary of anyone who does.

It depends on your industry and how fast you need leads. Ads buy visibility while SEO builds it, and plenty of businesses run both at different stages. Our digital marketing page walks through which suits which industry.
